Zilver Innovation approached 6 international students with an unusual summer internship brief: Making a documentary. Non of us had any idea of where to start or how to do it, but we decided to take the challenge and ended up doing “Design the New Business” a documentary about how design and business interact with each other. We elaborated the brand, storyline, concept, interview guides and went around Europe to film it. Later on we edited the material and distributed around the world with big success.
It was a team effort but everybody had specific responsibilities. The main roles I was involved were the website construction, community management, interviewing, editing and directing the movie. It was a major challenge that took far more time that what we all expected, but it was worth the effort. Through an iterative process I learned and refined my editing and directing skills, at the end we all contributed and ended up with a storyline that fitted our expectations and possibilities.
I learned a lot in this project, specifically from two sides, one being project management and the other design thinking. Project management wise I realized that having a good teamwork dynamics in creative projects is fundamental for their success. Working in the movie was not always easy on this regard; it was definitely a good learning point.
Interviewing and revising the work from experts in design thinking lead me to understand a bit better the fuzz and confusion around it. Most people don’t know really what they are doing and are finding out as they experiment and accomplish projects. Design thinking is an approach that requires discipline and effort, it´s not a magic wand that will solve the world’s problems.
